A tour of the South Bilgola Headland Trail, located in Newport and Bilgola, suburbs on the Sydney Northern Beaches. This is a connector trail which joins Newport Beach with Bilgola Beach, however the views along the way make it a worthwhile scenic walk to try if you are in the area.
Our entry point to the track is via the Newport Beach carpark. The trail ends at the carpark at Bilgola Beach. The walk offers excellent views of both Newport Beach and Bilgola Beach.

Only a minute into the trail the view opens up onto Newport Beach. As there is direct access to the sand this track is also an easy option for making your way to the north end of Newport Beach without having to walk on sand the whole way.
The majority of the walk is spent on well maintained dirt paths, stairs and wooden boardwalks.
On the western side of the track only meters away is the ever-busy Barrenjoey Road, however other than some road noise the dense bushland does an excellent job at screening almost all views of the road, allowing you the opportunity to relax and enjoy some of the ocean views.
This definitely isn’t a pram friendly walk, with stairs the whole way, but is still a nice addition to any list of best walks in Sydney. The trail is under 1km in length and very well maintained, so taking children along this track shouldn’t be a problem at all.
South Bilgola Headland Trail – Other Adventures Nearby
After completing this walk consider driving 5 minutes north along the road to Avalon, where you can have a different walking experience inside the Angophora Reserve, home of a (now dead, but still there) giant Angophora tree, all nestled between houses in the suburbs of Avalon, Bilgola Plateau and Clareville. Alternatively you can go 20 minutes north and check out the amazing Barrenjoey Lighthouse, or 5 minutes to the south is Monavale Headland Reserve.
South Bilgola Headland Trail – Getting There
For public transport, take the bus to the Newport Beach bus stop. Public transport at the Bilgola Beach end may be difficult, so it is best to just turn around and walk back to Newport Beach. Newport offers many different options for food and drink, with dozens of cafes, options for takeaway and a Coles supermarket. Car parking is available at both ends of the walk, and although there is paid parking in both beach car parks there is also street parking located a couple of minutes walk from the sand. Of course, during peak times the free street parking options can be limited.
And can you think of a better way to finish off a walk than with a swim. Both Newport Beach and Bilgola Beach are patrolled surf beaches, each with their own unique identities. But why choose, when you can just go to both?
