A tour of the Bangalley Headland Trail, located in Avalon, a suburb on the Sydney Northern Beaches. The trail is tucked away in the backstreets of Avalon, away from the main L90 bus tourist trail, so many don’t even know that this track exists.
Our entry point to the track is on Marine Parade, near the corner of Watkins Road. The other end of the trail exits onto Whale Beach Road between Careel Head Road and Alexander Road. Between these two points there aren’t really any places to exit the trail.

The length of the trail is just over approximately 1km. Many stairs can be found along the way, so this is definitely not a pram friendly walk. Our adventure begins by walking across a large grassed area, which is Bangalley Park, after which the dirt paths begin. The track is well maintained and easy to follow. Once you reach the highest elevation the path splits in two, with an “inland” shortcut, however it is very much recommended to stay on the ocean-view trail.
The Bangalley Headland Reserve Trail includes many lookout points, the photo opportunities alone make it one of the best walks in Sydney. These views extend from the Avalon Headland to the south, the Bangalley Headland and Careel Headland and then once you continue to progress along the track the views open to the north, first starting with Whale Beach and then the Palm Beach headland and across the water to the Central Coast region.
Bangalley Headland Trail – Other Adventures Nearby
This is a track that you can easily finish within an hour. If you are in the area already then you may as well link up with a few other tracks and make a full day of it. To the north the best option by far is to check out the world famous Barrenjoey Lighthouse Trail. To the south your options are also plentiful, with the South Bilgola Headland Trail which links Newport Beach with Bilgola Beach. Further south your options continue to the Monavale Headland Reserve Track or even the North Narrabeen Headland to Warriewood Track. There are too many options for walks on the beautiful Sydney Northern Beaches!
Bangalley Headland Trail – Getting There
For public transport, take the bus to the main Avalon stop where it is a 1.5km walk to the start of the trail via shared pathways and quiet backstreets. If you are driving to the trail, there are plenty of street parking options at the Avalon end. If you are starting at the Whale Beach Road end then street parking will be slightly more difficult, although still entirely possible.
